Bruce Redford, professor of art history and English at Boston University and co-curator of the exhibition "Grecian taste and Roman spirit" at the J Paul Getty Museum, lectures on the multifaceted activities and achievements of the Society of Dilettanti and discusses how its expeditions to the eastern Mediterranean and its important investigations into architecture, topography, and sculpture set new standards for the study of the Graeco-Roman past. Founded as a dining club for alumni of the Grand Tour, the Society of Dilettanti combined witty irreverence with a serious commitment to connoisseurship, collecting, and patronage of the fine arts.
